Just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. As a Dr. Fate fan I am grateful that he is back in the pages of DC Comics and that we have a really cool incarnation of the character. Also grateful that the pages of Earth 2 are written by a fantastic writer in that of Tom Taylor and graced by the wonderful art of Nicola Scott. I also want to extend my thanks to James Robinson for the awesome new incarnation of Dr. Fate as Khalid Ben-Hassin was his brain child. And of course I am grateful for the general life things; my family, my health, having a job and enough money to put food on the table, pay for my shelter and have enough left over to buy comic books every Wednesday.
So a Happy New Comic Book Day to everyone and an early Happy Thanksgiving as well. Hope everyone has a great holiday.

Angel in the slaughter.
The Queen. The Criminal. The resurrected hope. The alien.
Angel in the slaughter.
The Queen. The Criminal. The resurrected hope. The alien.
Above are Khalid/Dr. Fate's words he was left repeating over and over again after the epic beat down he received by Superman in the last issue of Earth 2. As usual, the rantings are very cryptic, but according to Tom Taylor in his interview with Newsarama (the unfridging of Lois Lane) these rantings are going to be very important. I gotta say, I really like this new "power" that Khalid has inherited as Dr. Fate. James Robinson's addition of this unfortunate third eye-sight makes him even more mystical, at least in my opinion. Some of the old Dr. Fate's were able to look into the future and see things much more clearly, but I like that Khalid gets partial sight into other's and his own fate. Makes him that more interesting.
As far as deciphering Khalid's prophetic rant means, there have been a few guesses. Matt Santori-Griffith of comicosity.com believes that "The Queen. The Criminal. The resurrected hope. The alien" all refer to Earth 2's Trinity (Wonder Woman, Batman, Lois Lane, Superman), where as I was thinking a possible crossover with Earth 1. I would place my money on Matt's guess, however, as it makes more sense. I still wonder who is the "Angel in the slaughter"? And I can only guess that the "Crumbles" part of the prophecy refers to Earth 2 crumbling or being shattered (but not completely destroyed) due to this current threat.
So what do you guys think? What do Dr. Fate's words mean? Is it a reference to Earth 2's original Trinity? Who is the Angel in the slaughter? Can't wait for the next issue of Earth 2!

These are very, very exiting times for DC Comics fans. Barry Allen is set to make his debut on Arrow in two weeks and after one more appearance on Arrow, the Flash will be getting his own show next fall. It would be cool if the DC shows would take a page out of DC comics tradition and eventually have the last 10 minutes of the show dedicated to introducing a new character. I don't know who they could introduce in that format, but maybe, maybe keeping with tradition, maybe they can introduce Doctor Fate a la 1980's comics style:
Ok, ok, ok....I know that probably won't happen, however , with the introduction of Solomon Grundy into Arrow (which is beyond awesome) and Hourman coming to television soon, DC comics and CW network, I beg of you, you MUST make this happen in an Hourman episode:
If this happens in an Hourman episode you have my word I will never, ever bug you about a Dr. Fate movie, or complain about anything DC ever again.
Indeed, these are exciting times for DC fans. Hourman, Flash, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Solomon Grundy, Speedy, possibly Nightwing all on television. If this had happened back when I was 8 or 9 years old my head would have exploded.

Twitter just informed me that it is Cosplay Appreciation Day today, so I put together some cosplay pictures I found from the internetz. Sorry I can't credit the appropriate cosplayers but if you see yourself on this blogpost please leave a comment below and let us know who you are. =) You guys are all awesome!
Last but not least is what I call hottie Dr. Fate. She gets more pictures than anyone else because she is a hottie and I am a man and therefor a pig. (Plus her cosplay is pretty darn cool)

Warning this review contains lots of spoilers
I'm going to start by saying that we Earth 2 fans have been incredibly spoiled. The book started off with an incredible writer in James Robinson and once he left the book gets picked up by another amazing writer in Tom Taylor. I'm incredibly grateful for having our heroes in such great hands, and the art by Nicola Scott is not too shabby either (despite my issues with the Helm).
On to the review; as many others have said Tom Taylor does a phenomenal job of picking up where James Robinson left off. He makes the book his own by throwing in some awesome twists such as the new identity of Red Tornado. I'm sure she will play a huge part in Superman's downfall. The entire book reads almost like a horror flick. As I was reading it, the story gave me that same feeling in my stomach I get when watching an intense scene in a horror movie. You could feel the panic in our heroes as they are dealing with a Superman who is bent on their destruction. I don't think I've ever seen superheroes backed into a corner like this. The last time might have been when the Spectre lost control and was hunting and killing magical beings. Our heroes are scared, as they should be because this Superman is scarier than any monster one could imagine. We've seen Superman lose control before but this is an entirely different beast.
The scene with Khalid/Dr. Fate is especially poignant.
You can feel Khalid's fear, reluctance and sense of duty in these panels. His hesitation in that whisper is so powerful. This is what makes Tom Taylor such a great writer, you connect those human emotions to these characters. Khalid is scared out of his mind but still knows he has to at least try to stop Superman. I can also almost imagine Nabu inside the helmet yelling "WTF, Khalid? Shut your F'ing mouth! Are you trying to get us killed?"
Another plus for Tom Taylor, is that in such a powerful scene, he still manages to inject some wit into the situation to make it feel lighter, even if it is just for a moment. Khalid dawns the helmet and teleports outside where this happens:
Superman catches Dr. Fate before he can react and promptly disposes of our hero. Before Superman can inflict a killing blow the Flash is able to rescue Dr. Fate. When taken to safety Dr. Fate's helmet is removed and Khalid has another prophetic vision, but he delivers it in a cryptic fashion that is difficult to understand.
In the comic we are also reintroduced to the new E2 Batman who is planning to release all of Arkham's inhabitants to deal with Superman.
Overall Earth 2 # 17 was amazing. Great read all the way through. However, I do have a couple of issues (wouldn't be a fanboy review if I didn't), I would have liked the Superman/Dr. Fate fight to be a little longer. I would have liked Dr. Fate to put up some kind of fight against Supes. After all, Dr. Fate, new to the game or not, is still one of the most powerful beings in the DCU. For him to be disposed of so quickly didn't feel right. I would have also liked to hear what Nabu is telling Khalid throughout the battle. Nabu was very quiet the entire time. It's not like him to be so quiet, especially in such a crucial time. Lastly, I want to see Khalid come into his own. I know he manned up and went out to fight Superman (took a lot of balls to do that) but I'd like to see him show more strength, like Jay did when he goes back after rescuing Dr. Fate. I know this is pretty much Dr. Fate Year One we are reading, but his predecessors showed much more resolve than this kid. I mean, Kent V. Nelson went to Hell to fight as his first mission and he didn't even have the benefit of Nabu's guidance. Come on Khalid, have some confidence in yourself kid.
Despite said issues, I give Mr. Taylor's first issue with Earth 2, two thumbs up. Can't wait to read more.

In today's installment of "F.U., I'm Doctor Fate!" we have a practitioner of the black arts conjure up some unicorns to throw at Dr. Fate. And not just unicorns, but maddened unicorns. Did he really think that was going to hurt the good doctor? All this does is just piss off Dr. Fate even more, and YOU DO NOT WANT TO PISS OFF GOLDEN AGE DOCTOR FATE! Trust me on this one.

Looks like a new hero will be coming to our television screen very soon! CW has announced the development of an Hourman show! I gotta admit I have mixed feelings about the show ranging from excitement to cautious optimism. So I decided to do a little pro and con breakdown on the proposed Hourman show:
1) This is a huge one, the entire show could be set on Earth 2!!!! How awesome would that be?!?!? We could have the JSA appearing on television. This first pro wins pretty much over everything else.
2) Doctor Fate has a HUGE chance of showing up on the Hourman show. And he better!!!
3) Potential cross over episodes with Arrow and Flash television shows.
4) A Golden Age JSA character is being recognized and given his own show. Very cool.
1) Looks like they might be taking his super strength away for future vision. However, he does work for a chemical factory so Miraclo can still be part of the show.
2) Obscure character such as Hourman may bomb on the ratings. Lets hope not.
3) From the description, I have a feeling he may never dawn the Hourman costume.
Overall, the potential of having the show be set in Earth 2 makes me so very excited. Also, the potential of having the JSA come together in live television is beyond my wildest dreams. So lets hope for the best, and thank you DC Comics, WB, and CW for making my inner child jump for joy at the chance of these things happening.
